The international aviation industry has developed a strategy to achieve the industry’s high-level emissions reduction goals. This strategy builds on four pillars, each contributing to a GHG reduction of 50% in 2050 compared to 2005 emission levels. Each of the four pillars requires strong commitment and collaboration between all stakeholders involved, which includes:

1. More efficient aircraft operations.

2. Infrastructure improvements.

3. A single global market based measure (MBM).

4. Improved technologies including deployment of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

In 2011, the European Commission in partnership with Airbus, and in cooperation with leading European Airlines (Lufthansa, Air France/KLM, and British Airways) and biofuel producers (Choren Industries, Neste Oils, Biomass Technology Group, and UOP) launched the European Advanced Biofuels Flightpath.
