On 13 June 2018 the SET-Plan Steering Group approved the Implementation Plan of SET-Plan Action 8 Bioenergy and Renewable Fuels for Sustainable Transport. The plan was prepared by a working group co- chaired by industrial experts from ETIP Bioenergy over the last nine months. It details the European Research and Innovation activities required until 2030 to reach the strategic targets for this sector. The estimated investment volume, to be provided by stakeholders, Member States and European Commission, amounts to 107 billion €. Patrik Klintbom, Chair of the Steering Committee of ETIP Bioenergy: “We now have a clear plan how to move forward in EU. ETIP Bioenergy is looking forward to implement the SET-Plan and will continue to support and push for the development of a world class Bioenergy and Renewable fuels industry”.
Mission Innovation Champions - a new recognition program for clean energy innovators
Mission Innovation Champions is a new recognition program to celebrate and support innovative individuals who are accelerating the clean energy revolution. The program was launched on the occasion of the Third Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-3) on 22-23 May 2018 at Malmö, Sweden, and is currently accepting registrations.
The program will recognize exceptional researchers and innovators who are developing novel ways of making energy cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable and using it more efficiently, calling worldwide attention to the most promising ideas from across the globe.
Champions may be from “traditional” inventor disciplines such as sciences, engineering, mathematics, and architecture or from other fields. One Champion from each Mission Innovation member participating in the program will be selected. The deadline for registration is 10 September 2018.
Upcoming Horizon 2020 calls for proposals
Horizon 2020 is nearing its final calls for proposals. The current Work Programme 2018-2020 “Secure, clean and efficient energy” contains a number of interesting topics related to advanced biofuels, renewable fuels and bioenergy and some particularly relevant for industry.
Some examples:
LC-SC3-RES-16-2019: Development of solutions based on renewable sources that provide flexibility to the energy system (intermediate bioenergy carriers from marginal lands, from TRL 3/4 to TRL 4/5; closing 27.08.2019)
LC-SC3-RES-17-2019: Demonstration of solutions based on renewable sources that provide flexibility to the energy system (intermediate bioenergy carriers, from TRL 5 to TRL 7, closing 11.12.2018)
LC-SC3-RES-23-2019: Development of next generation biofuel and alternative renewable fuel technologies for aviation and shipping (from TRL 3 to TRL 5, closing 27.08.2019)
LC-SC3-RES-24-2019: Boosting pre-commercial production of advanced aviation biofuels (from TRL 5 to TRL 7, closing 11.12.2018)
Although the call deadlines are still some months ahead, building a strong consortium takes time and should be started early.
Workshop - Bioenergy towards 2030: needs and opportunities for research and innovation to meet the targets for the next decade
Organized on 16 May 2018 in the framework of the 26th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition in Copenhagen, this event provided a high-level overview on the current policy, market trends and expectations for the future of the bioenergy sector in the European Union. Speakers discussed the role of bioenergy in the scenario of the EU Energy Union, the SET-Plan implementation, and the state of the art of the new EU programme for research and innovation related to renewable energy (Horizon Europe). A panel debate open to the audience discussed the outlook and the priorities for bioenergy in the European research and innovation agenda towards 2030. Over 65 people including experts from the European Commission, research organizations, companies and associations dealing with the bioenergy sector attended.
Workshop - Emerging Technologies
On 4 June 2018 Bioenergy 2020+ and ETIP Bioenergy organized a workshop in Brussels to the state of biofuel technologies at low TRL (Technology Readiness Level). Presentations elaborated on the status of research and demonstration of various biofuel technologies. The focus was on decentralized biomass conversion units at a scale compatible with regional biomass supply, integration of biofuels within fossil refineries as well as green hydrogen being produced from electrolysis to enhance the utilization of biogenic carbon in synthesis gas processes. Several low-TRL technologies were presented, together with research and demonstration bioenergy projects such as BABET-REAL5, for the implementation of small-scale lignocellulosic-based ethanol production facilities in rural areas, Waste2fuels, aiming to establish bio-butanol from waste streams as a sustainable alternative fuel, and COMSYN, based on a small-scale gasification concept. Projects financed by the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) to develop green hydrogen for decarbonising the industry and transport sectors were also presented.
Workshop - Supporting outset and consolidation of bioenergy value chains in South East Europe
On 3 July 2018, the Central European Initiative, in cooperation with SERBIO, the Serbian Biomass Association, organized a workshop in the framework of the 3rd South East European Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems, in Vojvodina (Serbia). The workshop addressed the role of ETIP Bioenergy, as well as the potentials of biomass-to-energy value chains in the Danube region, Serbia and Vojvodina, a highly developed agricultural region in Serbia with additional untapped biomass potentials. The workshop gathered twenty experts in representation of a varied set of stakeholders, ranging from academia, to associations, institutions and businesses.
