THE TURNING POINT TO SCALE-UP BIOENERGY AND RENEWABLE FUELS SOLUTIONS FOR DECARBONIZING THE TRANSPORT SECTOR

The 10th Stakeholder Plenary Meeting Event Summary

The EU Climate and Energy Policy framework that is evolving under the overarching goals of the EU Green Deal will set the context for the deployment of renewable fuels and bioenergy until 2030 and beyond. The Fit-for-55 package provides for the revision of the RED II and novel legislative proposals for the aviation and shipping sectors: ReFuelEU Aviation and FuelEU Maritime.

Biomass from perennials for regenerative agriculture and integrated biomass-food crop rotations can be viable options to broaden the sustainable feedstock base.

The integration of different technology solutions in a flexible mix is the fast way forward for bioenergy and renewable fuels, and the key to overcome the implementation barriers.

“There is no climate deal without sustainable biomass use, technology innovation needs a market development in line with the ambitious climate targets at EU and national level and ETIP Bioenergy is ready to contribute” - Patrik Klintbom, ETIP Bioenergy Steering Committee Chair.

WEBINAR: BIOMASS FOR ENERGY PURPOSES - TRUE AND FALSE ABOUT CLIMATE IMPACT

The most debated topics around the use of biomass for energy purposes were addressed in a webinar held on 10th December. This was jointly organised by ETIP Bioenergy, IEA Bioenergy and Renewable Transportation Fuels and Systems, a collaborative research programme financed by the Swedish Energy Agency and f3 Swedish Knowledge Centre for Renewable Transportation Fuels.

Is extraction of biomass sustainable from a climate perspective? Is there biomass enough to provide for the many different needs? And what about biological diversity, can it be secured?

Members of the European Parliament and prominent researchers in the field were involved, with the aim to broaden and deepen the knowledge base for the ongoing debate. Sweden served as a concrete example.

MAPPING NATIONAL R&I BIOENERGY PROJECTS

The SET4BIO project has set a goal of mapping the most important ongoing and recently finished R&I activities that will enable realizing the SET Plan IP8 - Implementation Plan for Action 8: Bioenergy and Renewable Fuels for Sustainable Transport.

This interactive tool provides an overview of Bioenergy R&I projects currently deployed and funded at national level across the SET Plan countries engaged in IWG8 (Implementation Working Group for Action 8).

Based on the Report on the state of play of the SET Plan IP8, the map was developed with the aim to improve the accessibility to information through a dynamic visualization of data. The covered projects are browsable by multiple criteria, especially by country and R&I activity. Other detailed information available on each project is displayed in pop-ups and panels.

This map is a work in progress, and new information about bioenergy projects is included along with periodical updates of the Report. If you want your project to appear in this map, to correct or update information, please contact info@set4bio.eu.

LATEST REPORTS

Hydrogen is highlighted as a key energy carrier in a future net zero green-house gas (GHG) emission society.

However, currently over 90% of the world’s hydrogen supply is produced from fossil natural gas and coal. If hydrogen is to be used as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, it needs to be produced without net emissions of GHG; one such alternative is to use forest biomass.

This work presents a literature review of technologies for hydrogen production from sustainably harvested forest biomass.

UPDATED FACT SHEETS

ETIP Bioenergy has recently published an updated version of its fact sheet about Methanol, describing the process technology and applications of this type of biofuel.

Another updated fact sheet illustrates the UPM Lappeenranta Biorefinery, producing wood-based renewable diesel from forest industry residues.
