BIOGAS THROUGH ANAEROBICDIGESTION FROM WASTE STREAMS AS A RENEWABLE TRANSPORTATION FUEL - A BRIEF REVIEW OF TECHNOLOGY
Upgraded and purified biogas from anaerobic digestion, also known as biomethane, is an environmentallyfriendly renewable transportation fuel that is already commercially available for road transports. Biomethane shows low emissions of greenhouse gases compared to other transportation fuels, especially if waste streams are used as feedstock, and the emissions can even be negative in the case of manure.
In this review, a technical overview is given for the available technology and how to process different organic waste streams and convert them to transportation fuel. The dry solids content (i.e. the viscosity) and particle size are the most important parameters determining the type of technology to be used: a sugar rich water stream is very different from agricultural crop residues. Another important aspect is the amount of contamination and unwanted material in the feedstock, since it is desirable to produce ahigh value digestate that can be used to fertilize agricultural land.

ETIP BIOENERGY WG 3 - 2021 ORIENTATION PAPER AND ACTION PLAN
ETIP Bioenergy WG3 has recenlty published an updated orientation paper and action plan on end-use and distribution of biofuels in Europe, for road transport, air, rail and shipping.
The paper includes a focus on EU regulations on CO2 emissions in road transport (Well-to-Tank, Tank-to-Wheel), on fuels regulations (Directive on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources-RED II and Fuel Quality Directive) as well as on vehicle regulations.
It also discusses the common themes, issues and challenges presented by light duty vehicles and the related use of petrol LDV and diesel LDV, and the ones presented by heavy duty vehicles.
The challenges and features of air transport, in particular of the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) technology portfolio offer and of the maritime transport sector are also shared and presented.

UPDATED COUNTRY FACT SHEETS: FINLAND, FRANCE, UKRAINE, NETHERLANDS, SWEDEN
ETIP Bioenergy has recently publishedan updated version of its country factsheets on Finland, France, Ukraine, The Netherlands and Sweden.
The fact sheets include information on each country's bioenergy market, biofuels regulations, policy and market development, heat generation, electricity generation as well as examples of demo plants.
SUSTAINABILITY OVERVIEW UPDATE: PALM OIL
Palm oil is one of most traded and cheapest vegetable oils. The production and consumption of palm oil over the past 30 years have expanded significantly. Especially in Malaysia and Indonesia – the 2 countries providing 85% of the world supply – the production has risen by 15 respectively 25 times compared to their beginning in the 1980s.
 This expansion is partly due to the increased use of palm oil in the food industry, since palm oil has very favorable processing properties, as well as due to the increased use in the production of biodiesel (FAME) and HVO. ETIP Bioenergy has recently published some updated information on this topic.

BIOMASS TO LIQUIDS (BTL) VIA FISCHER-TROPSCH – A BRIEF REVIEW
Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) is mature technology that converts synthesis gas (CO and H2) into liquid crude readily upgradable to standard transportation fuels.
 The synthesis gas may be produced from a variety of carbonaceous feedstocks, such as coal, natural gas, biomass, residues or even carbon dioxide.
This review summarizes recent experimental, commercial/demo/pilot and techno-economic publications of FT technology based on feedstocks that qualify REDII Annex IX A and with a product focus on sectors deemed more difficult to decarbonize in the short-term, such as long-distance transport, aviation and shipping.

CONSULTATION ON THE REVIEW OF DIRECTIVE 2018/2001/EU ON THE PROMOTION OF THE USE OF ENERGY FROM RENEWABLE SOURCES
The European Commission is preparing a review and a revision of the Renewable Energy Directive to ensure that renewable energy contributes to the achievement of the increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target set in the 2030 Climate Target Plan for 2030, as well as to implement the measures proposed in the Energy System Integration and Hydrogen strategies, the Renovation wave initiative, and other initiatives adopted under the European Green Deal.
 The objective of this consultation is to seek stakeholder views on how the Renewable Energy Directive should be revised. ETIP Bioenergy has recently submitted a joint statement to the public consultation launched by the European Commission on 17 November 2020.

POSITION STATEMENT ON THE CONSULTATION “SUSTAINABLE FINANCE – EU CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM FOR GREEN INVESTMENTS”
ETIP Bioenergy has recently submitted a position statement on the European Commission’s consultation “Sustainable finance – EU classification system for green investments”.
ETIP Bioenergy fully supports the ambition of the Green Deal for net climate neutrality in 2050, as well as increasing the GHG emission target to at least 55% in 2030.
Also the initiative to create a classification system for sustainable economic activities (‘taxonomy’) is very welcome.
