REVAMPING OF THE SET PLAN: THE ROLE OF BIOENERGY AND RENEWABLE FUELS
The SET Plan is a key instrument to achieve the EU Green Deal objectives. For this reason, an urgent ‘revamp’ is needed to align the Plan with the evolving policy framework and current geopolitical developments.
This year’s SET Plan Progress Report 2022 aims to support the revamping process by drawing out the latest achievements and possible ways forward for the SET Plan. The focus is on clean energy technologies and their a strategic role for the sustainability of the European energy system: supporting them is crucial both to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and to respond to the current energy crisis in a cost-effective manner.
In this framework, the SET Plan Report recognizes the important contribution that bioenergy and renewable fuels can give to achieve the Green Deal targets, both by providing a variety of solutions in the clean energy field, and by establishing synergies with other sectors – such as food production and waste management.
The 2022 SET Plan Conference “Towards a new Strategic Energy Technology Plan”, held on the 9-10 November in Prague, provided a platform to discuss the future of the SET Plan in relation to the European policy context and geopolitical challenges.
FINANCING OPPORTUNITIES FOR BIOENERGY AND BIOFUELS
Identifying and mobilizing resources is imperative for the scale-up of bioenergy and renewable fuels.
SET4BIO identified a roadmap for funding and financing bioenergy and renewable fuels projects, both from public and private sources. The roadmap is aimed at being a guide to find the most suitable mechanism for financing projects in the bioenergy and renewable fuels sector, at the same time creating awareness of funding needs and challenges among key stakeholders, Member States and the European Union.
An interactive tool was then developed basing on the research results presented in D1.3 Report on private financing opportunities to support the realisation of the SET Plan IP8 and in the factsheet Financing Roadmaps and Funding Instruments for Bioenergy
HORIZON EUROPE: NEW FUNDING FOR R&I PROJECTS UNDER CLUSTER 5
On 13 December, the European Commission has launched new calls for projects under Horizon Europe's Work Programme for 2023-2024 Cluster 5 – which groups together topics on climate action, energy and mobility.
FINANCING INNOVATIVE CLEAN TECH CONFERENCE
On 19 January 2023, this Conference organised by CINEA and EC DG CLIMA will gather European policy makers, investors, stakeholders as well as major market players in their respective industries.
This event is designed to raise awareness among the community of public and private financiers about the many business opportunities brought by the EU Innovation Fund and to promote dialogue with industry.
WORKSHOP: INNOVATION FUND SYNERGIES
The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), the European Commission's DG Climate Action and Research and Innovation are organising a half-day virtual Workshop on Innovation Fund synergies, to be held on 8 February 2023.
The focus is to gather participants from mature R&I projects funded under EU R&I funding programmes to explore funding opportunities under the Innovation Fund to deploy their technologies.
ABOUT SET4BIO
SET4BIO is a collaborative Horizon 2020 project to support the implementation of the SET Plan Action 8 – Renewable Fuels and Bioenergy. SET4BIO will bring together private and public actors in a joint effort to mobilize the resources and to stimulate the investments for the deployment of bioenergy and renewable fuels at large scale in Europe. SET4BIO aims at making a step change in the build-up of a cost-competitive bioenergy and renewable fuels market in Europe and globally, as foreseen by the Energy Union and by the Integrated Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan, endorsed by EU Member States and SET Plan Associated Countries.
