The next green revolution
How to feed 10 billion people by 2050, whilst meeting the climate goals of the Paris agreement and breaking the fossil fuel chain? This is the “Man-on-the-Moon programme” of our era. The world will need to double crop yield by 2050 to give everyone food security and enable a sustainable industrial base. This will require a revolution in agriculture. Such a revolution can be provided through technology that focuses on re-designing the engine of biological productivity –photosynthesis. By tuning the green engine of life we can double crop yields by 2050. Together we can make this next green revolution happen. It will be a transforming economic opportunity, ensuring food security and dealing with climate change – leading to a World we would all want to live in.
Photosynthesis: the engine for future agriculture
The workshop will be organised in Brussels on October 17, the day after the Harnessing Research and Innovation for FOOD2030 congress. A team of experts from various European Universities and Institutions will present Photosynthesis 2.0; an initiative for a large-scale 10-year research programme to launch at the onset of the 9th Framework Programme. This will harness European expertise in the plant sciences in pursuit of our goal of doubling crop yields by 2050.
