This study seeks to support the European Commission in the elaboration of a methodology for the deployment of advanced biofuels. Currently, the contribution of advanced and other renewable fuels is very limited in the EU with a relative higher cost than fossil fuels they aim to replace. The Sub Group on Advanced Biofuels of the Sustainable Transport Forum consisted of 32 industry experts representing all advanced biofuels value chains as well as the transport sectors of aviation, maritime and heavy duty transport. The work of the Sub Group on Advanced Biofuels put forward a simple and transparent definition for advanced biofuels, proposed reliable targets for deployment of advanced biofuels in the EU market by 2030, updated the technology status of the various value chains and examined thoroughly the production costs of advanced biofuels. The Sub Group on Advanced Biofuels also considered carefully the proposals on decarbonising transport in the recast of the Renewable Energy Directive and put forward proposals for improvements aiming to create a long term stable framework for encouraging billions of investments.
