Multidisciplinary research expertise in plant biology and cultivation, bio-diesel production and bio-fuel use for combined heat and power, transportation, electrical generation and other industrial approaches. Activities include identification of suitable varieties and cultivars, tissue culture and transformation protocols, innovative bio-diesel production processes, improvements to bio-diesel quality, use of bio-fuels in complex thermal systems, investigations into bio-diesel combustion properties, use of bio-oils in power plants, efficiency and emission testing and research into emission reduction methods. Research activities are supported by excellent infrastructure including the Jones Engine Laboratory which has a wide range of medium to high speed engines and bio-fuel research sites in Thailand and India. In addition Cockle Park Farm, the proposed site for the Centre for Renewable Energy from Land (CREEL). The new centre will generate its own heat and electricity, and provide space for interdisciplinary research, educational facilities and equipment demonstration, including a virtual reality training facility.
