Research in biorefining with oil crops like rape seed, where whole crops are refined to biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen and various nutrients for humans and animals as well as biopolymers from polylactate made from glycerol. SDU is participating in the Danish national research programme for development of biofuels with special interst in more effective production methods of biodiesel from plant oils in general. SDU is also participating in development of effective methods for production of bioethanol from second generation biomass and plays a role in developping biorefineries based on the use of whole crop biomass (i.e. rape seed crops, grain crops and the basis for using micro algae from marine environments).
