Research and development in chemical engineering science and technology applied to energy, fuels and chemicals from renewable and sustainable biomass resources. Activities include studies of pyrolysis for production of liquid (bio-oil), gas and charcoal and gasification for production of gas for use as fuel, for production of hydrogen, or for synthesis of transport fuels and chemical as well as combustion for production of heat that can be used for heat and/or power production. Is a partner in the BRISK, the European Research Infrastructure for Thermochemical Biomass Conversion, supporting R&D on innovative processes to convert sustainable feedstocks (agricultural/forestry wastes and energy crops) into liquid, gaseous or solid fuels.
