Involved in research and development, training and sustainable development in areas of energy, transport and the environment. As a pioneer in the area of biofuels it is intensifying its research efforts and designing new innovative processes to convert agricultural and forestry waste into biofuels.

IFPEN has been a pioneer in the development of 1st-generation biodiesel. For example, it is at the origin of the Esterfip-H™ process, marketed by Axens. Axens, a subsidiary of IFPEN, brought an HVO process to market in 2011 under the Vegan™ name. Is also involved in the  Futurol project, launched in 2008, to develop a complete chain for the production of 2nd-generation bioethanol from whole plants by 2016. The BioTfueL demonstration project, launched in 2010, incorporates gasification of biomass and the purification of the synthetic gas produced, followed by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis to convert the synthetic gas into very high quality biodiesel and biokerosene.
